No More Peace! Dog Learns to Turn the Lights Off to Get His Owner’s Attention

A mixed-breed dog named Pepe proved just how smart he is when he discovered a fail-proof tactic to get the attention of his owner, journalist Fernanda Decaris, who works from home. So what does he do? He turns the lights on and off while she’s working. Yep… no more peace for her!

Thinking what he did was amazing, the journalist recorded the moment and shared it on her TikTok profile with the caption:

“Very smart, but now I can’t work.”

In the video, the dog—who was adopted from a rescue organization—is seen on the couch’s armrest, stretching to reach the light switch and turn it off. In another moment, he’s seen next to Fernanda’s desk, where the switch is lower, turning the lights off repeatedly—despite his owner’s insistence on turning them back on.

Yeah... Miss Fernanda will have to give Pepe some attention—whether she wants to or not! Haha.

In an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about pet news), Fernanda said she has no idea how Pepe learned to mess with the light switch, but confirmed he can associate words easily and learns tricks quickly.

“I think at some point he sniffed it and figured out he could turn it on or off,” she said.

Trying to take advantage of the dog’s ability, Fernanda even tried to train him with words to turn the lights on and off. (Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and your pet does that for you—how nice would that be?) But not even treats helped him learn.

I believe Pepe keeps this trick to himself to get his owner’s attention whenever he wants to go for a walk. When he scratches the door and Fernanda doesn’t respond, he uses this tactic to show what he wants. Such a clever boy!

The video of him doing this has garnered over 45,000 views, thousands of reactions, and hundreds of funny comments.

Ever since he was adopted, Pepe has been Fernanda’s sweetheart. Fernanda says that ever since she was a child, she has had dogs. As she got older, she realized there are many stray animals in need of a home. That’s why she decided to adopt.

“Pepe is my first adopted dog,” she revealed. “It’s different when you adopt a dog like that because they tend to be very needy and clingy. He became like a son to me.”

Fernanda named him after former Uruguayan president José Mujica, also known as Pepe Mujica. Now, inspired by the public figure, Pepe shines with his own charming personality.
