‘Mom, It’s Alive!’: Cat Causes Chaos by Bringing Cockroach Home, and the Internet Can’t Stop Laughing

Anyone else disgusted by cockroaches? Apparently, young Erison Silva is. His mother, Josiane, isn’t. And the family cat, Phantom, is even less bothered. Now imagine this trio getting into a mess involving a cockroach. It’s sure to make you laugh!

The video of this family chaos was shared on the TikTok profile @erisonsilvaa last week, making many internet users cry with laughter. You’re sure to be one of them!

In the video, Erison, who is on the opposite side of the room, films Phantom playing with a cockroach and shouts, “Mom, the cockroach is alive!” Then, he points his phone at Josiane, who is sitting on the couch, uninterested in her son’s fear.

“Mommy, the roach, mom!” Erison yells again. Fumbling with her cell phone, Josiane shrugs off the situation (it’s understandable, after all, internet gossip comes first, right?!)

But to avoid making Erison feel bad, she says, “Hey roach, go away,” as if the creature would actually listen to the command (laughing out loud).

The cat takes advantage of the situation, having fun with his new “toy.” Because of her son’s screaming, Josiane forces herself to get up and, hitting the floor with her slipper, yells, “Get out of here, cockroach!” At that moment, Phantom lets go of the insect, and the mother delivers the final blow. The roach lies dead.

Chasing bugs is a fun way for grateful cats to play, according to Meghan Herron, a veterinarian and clinical assistant professor of behavioral medicine at Ohio State University, who spoke to the news portal PetMD:

“Most of the time, chasing and eating insects is fun and instinctive because insects move quickly, and cats’ brains are programmed to chase them,” says the doctor. “Because they are not as domesticated as their canine counterparts, this innate desire to hunt and practice predation through play is still quite active in domestic cats.”

In an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian pet news website), Erison said the video was originally posted in his stories, but his audience found it so funny that he decided to share it on his Instagram and TikTok feeds. The young man also shared how the pet became part of the family.

Phantom, the video’s main character (or perhaps supporting character?), is the kitten of a cat Josiane found on the street and named Guria. The seven-month-old feline has a habit of bringing home these unusual gifts.

“My mom was focused on sending a message. Then I said, ‘The cat has a cockroach,’ and she didn’t even react—she was so focused,” he recalled. “My mom can’t multitask.”

Erison’s nine-year-old sister is very attached to Guria, Phantom, and the family’s other kitten. Josiane cares for them with great affection, knowing her daughter loves them endlessly.

So, this kind of gift won’t make Josiane mad at him. On the contrary, it’ll make her laugh a lot!

Curious to see the video? Over 132,000 internet users have watched it, 28,000 have reacted, and thousands have commented.

“Ooooh my God, I’m dying from laughing so hard,” wrote one user.
“I can’t get enough of this video,” declared another.
“I’ve seen this video about ten times, and every time I watch it, I die laughing,” commented a third.
