Big Baby Energy: Pandemic Pup Now 44 Pounds, But Still a Total Lap Dog
By Gabriele Tancredo Stella in DogsMarcelle Giordani was one of many people who adopted pets during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, her dog was still a puppy and quickly got used to sitting on her lap while she attended online classes and studied. The pair lives in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
Recently, Marcelle shared a TikTok video showing that Liz—now fully grown and weighing 44 pounds—still insists on climbing into her lap. “This 44-pound cutie still sees herself as a little baby,” she wrote in the video’s caption.
Liz came into Marcelle’s life thanks to a Facebook post. A couple had shared a photo of the little dog—who was four months old at the time—after finding out they were expecting a baby.
“When I saw the post, I felt so sorry, and my heart sank,” Marcelle said in an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian pet news website).
Since Liz arrived, the young woman’s life has changed completely. She started including Liz in countless daily tasks and commitments— even during her study time.
Liz is Marcelle’s only pet and became her closest companion during the lockdown; today, the two are inseparable.
“Since I was living alone at the time, it was really hard to deal with the loneliness during the pandemic. But when I met Liz, my intuition told me we were meant to be together. It was the perfect opportunity for both of us,” she added.
In addition to keeping Marcelle company, Liz also played a key role in helping her overcome depression. The bond they share continues to grow stronger, despite their daily responsibilities.
What matters most is that Marcelle always comes home to enjoy Liz’s company.
"We all know that the isolation period was extremely difficult. We built our entire relationship on affection and trust. That’s how she helped me through a deep depression, and I was able to save her from being abandoned. We see each other as a safe haven. I'd like to highlight the responsibility of adopting a pet during the pandemic, as it was clear that routines would change after isolation, and the pet would need to be included in this new routine and adapt to post-pandemic life," the owner concluded.
The video of Liz asking her guardian to hold her has received over 480,000 views, 130,000 likes, and nearly 940 comments.
“So cute. My dog stopped wanting to be held after he grew up—he became a teenager,” commented one internet user.
“The funniest thing is that she thinks she’s small,” said Taty.
“The important thing is that you don’t deny it,” Yasmin added.
Although she enjoys feeling like the “baby” of the house, Liz also loves her moments of freedom and fun. According to her owner, Liz attends daycare every Friday. She's extremely social with other dogs but afraid of cats and the robotic vacuum cleaner.
