“Theo is just a naughty child—haha!”

Theo, a Border Collie mix, loves to play tag. When his owner, Maria Sandra de Souza, isn’t in the mood to play, he always finds a way to make her join in. He grabs her bag in his mouth and bolts—making her chase after him. He’s such a clever boy!

Maria lives in São Paulo, Brazil, and every day she walks Theo down a quiet dead-end street. Since there’s no traffic, she lets him off-leash to run freely. She always brings a bag with water and toys for him—and it was that very bag he used to play a trick on her.

“That day, he took advantage while I was on my phone and stole my bag. When I tried to get it back, he kept running around the parked vans, blocking my every move. When I pretended to give up chasing him, he’d lie down—but as soon as I got close, he’d jump up and start running again,” Maria told

(our Brazilian website about pet news).

It wasn’t easy to convince him to drop the bag! Maria spent quite a while running after him. He only gave up when Maria pretended to head back home. He didn’t want to be left there alone—did he? Haha.

“Then he dropped the bag and ran to catch up with me… Despite everything, I wasn’t upset with him. I decided to capture the moment and have fun with it,” she said.

The moment he runs off with the bag is hilarious! He dashes around the parked vehicles without mercy, making his owner chase after him. But you can’t blame him—after all, all he wanted was his human’s attention.

Theo is adopted! Maria never wanted a dog—until one of her friends got a Golden Retriever. Spending time with the pet made her rethink her decision, and soon the desire for a four-legged friend bloomed.

“I didn’t want to buy one. Every time I saw a post about adoption, I tried—but it never worked out. Until one day, I told a friend I was interested, and she said she knew someone who knew someone giving a dog away.”

When Maria saw Theo, it was love at first sight! Today, they’re best friends—one can’t live without the other.

“I have no doubt he was meant to be mine. The way he came into my life—a gift from God—he teaches me every day to be a better person,” she concluded.

Why Do Dogs Like Being Chased?

Dogs enjoy being chased because it activates their natural hunting and escape instincts. Since their wild ancestors’ days, chase games have been linked to survival.

For dogs, being chased is a playful way to exercise their agility, speed, and reflexes. It also strengthens social bonds with other dogs or their humans, promoting emotional connection and a sense of fun.
