Husband Gifts Chihuahua to Wife, but the Dog Grows and Surprises Everyone

Content creator Mayume Maia’s husband decided to surprise her with a Chihuahua puppy. She couldn’t have been happier with the gift — but a few days later came another surprise: the dog wasn’t the breed the couple expected — but instead, an adorable mixed-breed.

The video of this adorable mix-up was shared on Mayume’s TikTok (@maymmaia) on July 6, garnering over 79,000 views.

The family lives in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and Doralice — the dog — entered Mayume’s life in September. The video starts with a photo of the couple, showing Mayume happily hugging her husband, Eduardo Ribeiro. Little did they know what was coming — haha!

“And my husband gave me a dog, saying it was a Chihuahua.” Then it cuts to a photo of an actual Chihuahua — what the couple was expecting.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Chihuahuas are a breed that originated in Mexico. They’re known for their distinctive features, such as their tiny size — typically weighing between 3 and 6.5 pounds. They have a rounded head with large, expressive eyes, upright or floppy ears, and an overall graceful appearance.

They are alert, curious, and often brave — despite their size. They tend to have vibrant personalities, are loyal, and often very attached to their owners. They can be protective and need proper socialization to get along with strangers and other animals.

That was the expectation — but as Doralice grew, it became clear she wasn’t a Chihuahua, but rather a beautiful mixed-breed. And that doesn’t matter, because Mayume loves her unconditionally.

In an interview with Amo Meu Pet, Mayume explained that the gift came at a time when she and Eduardo were about to get married and move into a small apartment. To keep Mayume from feeling lonely, he decided to surprise her with a dog.

“He bought her because we needed to make sure she’d stay small, since our apartment is tiny. Plus, we travel a lot, so to bring her on a plane, she had to weigh under 22 pounds,” she explained.

As days went by, the couple realized that her ears, tongue, and fur were very different from a Chihuahua’s. “Her ears and tongue were too big, and her fur was really thin,” Mayume said, laughing.

“Then one day, my mom took her to the vet for a vaccine, and he informed her that the dog wasn’t a pure Chihuahua. He admitted he hadn’t had the courage to say it earlier, since from the beginning, my husband and I insisted she was a Chihuahua,” she recalled.

For her first birthday, Doralice had a Barbie-themed party — all in pink. The celebration was a way for Mayume to show her love for Doralice — not only despite the breed mix-up, but also to celebrate her victory over parvovirus.

“Dorinha means everything to us! She arrived and was soon diagnosed with parvovirus. We did everything we could to care for her — and she was incredibly strong! She handled the treatment so well, and today she’s VERY healthy!” she said. “At the time, the woman offered to take her back and give us a healthy puppy — but we didn’t even consider it. It was love at first sight!”, she concluded.

And it doesn’t stop there… Mayume and Doralice enjoy lots of activities together, like going to the mall and having lunch at restaurants on Fridays. Their “mother-daughter” bond is strong, always filled with fun, love, and joy.
