Every time the woman left home, she’d find her beloved dogs walking down the street just minutes later. Thinking someone at home was opening the gate to let them out, she got into arguments with nearly everyone. She told Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about pet news) how she finally uncovered the real culprits behind the mischief.

Carla Souza, who lives in Minas Gerais, felt embarrassed by her two dogs, Café (the black one) and Kiara (the caramel one).

She would leave for work or to run errands, only to come back and find the gate wide open.

“I found the gate open all the time, and when I left they would follow me or sit in front of the gate waiting for me,” Carla explained to Amo Meu Pet.

Worried about how the dogs kept escaping, she naturally blamed her family. After all, what else could it be?

“I was so confused. I argued with my whole family, thinking one of them was responsible—but in the end, it was Café,” she said.

To catch the real culprit, Carla came up with a plan. She placed her phone in a strategic spot, hit record, and left the house. Just over a minute later, Café got up, opened the gate, and strutted out like a pro.

“I found out it was Café when I left my phone recording while I went to the bakery. When I came back and watched the footage—bingo! It was him!” she said.

Despite all the drama caused by the sneaky pup, Carla decided to share the video on her TikTok—and it now has over 7.3 million views.

“Some people even think the video is edited,” she joked.

In the comments, TikTok users were divided—some praised the little dog’s intelligence, while others doubted he could pull it off without training.

Monica Gracia: “Wow, such intelligence… so beautiful!”
Tony doubted Café’s skills: “I’ll only believe it if I see he doesn’t have a motor hidden inside,” he joked.
Aline noticed the dogs’ guilty behavior: “They know they’re doing something wrong. They keep looking back to see if anyone’s watching,” she pointed out.
Banda Melodia Eterna joked: “I only believe it when I see it… I see it—still don’t believe it!”

Can Dogs Learn to Open Doors?

Although it’s not a natural behavior, dogs—especially service dogs—can learn to open doors quite easily. According to Wag Walking, many dogs take pride in learning to be helpful and love being involved in family life.

If your dog has learned to open doors, it’s important to secure the area to keep him from leaving unsupervised. This could lead to an accident or even result in him getting lost.
