Grieving Dog Has Heartbreaking Reaction to Late Owner’s Photo

Lilica is a 10-year-old dog who spent many happy years with her owner, Solange, also known as Sol.

Their bond was so strong that being apart caused Lilica distress. Every time Sol returned from work, Lilica greeted her with endless licks and joyful tail wags.

But then, something heartbreaking happened.

In February, Sol passed away, leaving behind only memories and a deep sense of longing in Lilica.

Lilica had countless memories with Sol, having joined the family as a tiny puppy.

When Solange’s sister’s dog had puppies, she offered one to Sol, who instantly fell in love and named her Lilica.

Lilica shared many memorable moments over those ten years with Solange. Now, Solange's presence is symbolized by a photo that hangs in the home of her son, Pedro Amorim.

Pedro, who lives in São Paulo, Brazil, captured the emotional moment Lilica gazed sadly at her owner’s photo.

Moved by the scene, he shared the video on his TikTok on November 18, captioned “this broke me…”. The post has since garnered over 5.8 million views.

In an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian pet news website), Pedro said the bond between Solange and Lilica was remarkable. The family would often joke that Lilica might break her tail from wagging it so much, as the two always played together.

Lilica’s Grief

After Solange passed away, Pedro shared that Lilica was deeply sad and showed signs of depression.

“I even thought she was developing depression. Even now, she still seems a bit down,” Pedro commented.

It’s no surprise—losing a loved one is painful, and animals can grieve just as deeply as humans.

According to the blog of the animal clinic VCA Animals Hospitals, located in the United States, dogs often show signs of mourning when they lose a close human or fellow pet they bonded with.

These signs may include sadness, loss of appetite, excessive vocalizing, and searching for their missing companion.

Even though dogs don’t perceive death the same way we do, they clearly feel the absence of loved ones and react emotionally.

Lilica wasn’t alone—she and Pedro have supported each other for the past ten months as they cope with the loss of Solange.

“My life completely changed. Lilica reminds me so much of my mom—she means everything to me and is truly part of the family. After seeing her gaze at the photo, I realized just how much she misses my mother and how deeply she feels the loss,” he concluded.

The Video

Pedro used a clip from the film Central Station as background audio, making the scene even more moving. The touching moment moved thousands of viewers, who flooded the post with emotional comments.

“Losing a pet hurts, but watching a pet grieve for their owner is absolutely heartbreaking,” wrote one TikToker.

“They love so sincerely and purely... sometimes I wonder if we’re even worthy of such affection,” commented another user.
