Stray Dog Pulled Off the “Perfect Scam” to Get Adopted—And It Worked

A caramel-colored mutt named Perla Katharina not only won over the foster home she was in but also the heart of a 6-year-old boy. The mischievous little dog pulled off the perfect scam and earned herself a forever home
Anúbia Paula Nogueira, Henry’s mother, is a veterinarian and rescue volunteer in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. She shared in a TikTok video how Perla became part of the family.
“When a foster home begs to become permanent,” she wrote.
Speaking to Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about pet news), Anúbia explained how Perla’s charisma won over Henry and the entire family—and how she was rescued. “Perla was found in January of this year by a client about five miles from the city. She was lying on the curb after a hit-and-run. He rescued her,”
At just over 65 days old, the dog had suffered multiple fractures—one in each femur, one in the pelvis, and a dislocation.
“Since I’m a veterinarian and have a clinic in the city, I performed the initial emergency exam. During the exam, we found a fracture in one leg. But I’m not an orthopedic specialist, so I referred Perla to a clinic in Campo Grande—where an X-ray revealed more injuries.”
Four procedures were needed in a single day to save the caramel-colored stray’s life. Fortunately, everything went well, and Perla could go home—but to which home? “The man who found her paid for all her orthopedic treatment but couldn’t keep her after the surgery. Since I already volunteered to help stray animals, I offered to foster her temporarily,” Anúbia explained.
That was exactly when Anúbia began falling for Perla’s perfect little plan! “Right away, my son started to get attached to her. They became inseparable,” Anúbia said, adding, “She went straight for Henry—the boss of the house.”
Family of Pets!
Thankfully, Perla made a full recovery from the accident and is now a beloved member of the family. And if you think Henry is the only soft-hearted one—you’re mistaken. Besides Perla, Anúbia cares for eight other dogs, eleven cats, a tortoise, and even an owl.
Three of the dogs and cats are hers, while the others are rescues currently being fostered at her home. This includes the tortoise, which Anúbia is rehabilitating before releasing it back into the wild.
