Little Gabriela Vitória’s dream was to have a puppy. However, her parents didn’t feel they had the right conditions due to their busy lives and the kids always being at school. And as we all know, dogs require attention and care.

Glaucia Garcia Silva and her husband decided to surprise their daughter! So, a while ago, they gave her Bento as a gift. The day of this beautiful surprise was recorded and shared with us here at Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about pet news) via WhatsApp.

“The day our puppy arrived was very touching, because our youngest, Gabriela, is absolutely in love with animals and had been hoping to get one. When this day finally arrived, she couldn’t believe it, and her reaction was awesome,” Glaucia told Amo Meu Pet.

In the video, we see Bento as a puppy on the bed. Gabriela, distracted while talking to her parents, walks into the room and, when she notices the little dog there, she can’t contain her emotions. She kneels on the floor and, moved, leans on the bed, in disbelief.

Doubting that the dog is hers, she raises her head, looks at her father, and asks: “Are you serious? Are you serious, Dad?”

After receiving a positive response, the little girl calms down and picks up the puppy to pet him. Imagine Gabriela’s joy!

The family lives in São Paulo, Brazil, and according to Glaucia, her daughter has always been very passionate about animals, regardless of the species. “Whenever she found a puppy on the street, she would stop to play with it,” she recalled.

Before Bento, the family had tried to adopt a pet twice. However, since Gabriela was small and couldn’t take care of them, and her parents spent most of their time working, it didn’t work out. Both were given to responsible and loving families.

Time passed and Gabriela grew up, but the insistence on having a puppy remained. After several family meetings, Glaucia and her husband decided to get a dog, but they did not tell their daughter about this decision.

“My husband made all the arrangements, and on the day Bento arrived, since she wasn’t at home, we surprised her.”

Two years have passed; Gabriela and Bento are inseparable, as Glaucia explained: “She loves him. He has brought a lot of joy to our home.”

Benefits of having a pet as a child

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), having a pet as a child can bring a number of benefits to children’s physical, emotional and social development. Here are some of the most common benefits:

Companionship and emotional support: Pets, such as dogs and cats, can provide unconditional love and emotional support to children, helping them cope with stress, loneliness, and anxiety.

Emotional development: Caring for a pet helps children learn about empathy, responsibility, patience, and compassion. They develop important emotional skills as they care for the animal’s well-being.

Physical activity: Having a pet encourages them to engage in physical activities, such as dog walks, active play, and outdoor games. This contributes to a more active and healthy lifestyle.

Socialization: Pets can help children socialize by helping them interact with other people. By taking their pets for walks or taking them to social events, children have the opportunity to meet new people and make friends.

Cognitive development: Caring for a pet involves ongoing learning. Children can learn about different species, animal behavior, nutrition, health, and even basic animal training.

Developing social and emotional skills: Having a pet can help children develop communication skills, such as speaking, listening, and interpreting nonverbal cues. In addition, caring for a pet promotes responsibility, organization, and discipline.
