White Shepherd Dog Learns to Open the Door for His Owner with Reduced Mobility
“We taught him only twice, but now we don’t need to ask anymore—he just does it.”
By Gabriele Tancredo Stella in Dogs
Nathan is a White Shepherd who is deeply loved by his family and knows exactly how to return the affection: by taking care of the ones he loves.
One of the things he does is open the door for his owner, Ana Paula Anflor Corchaki Ferreira. She has reduced mobility, and to make her daily life easier, the three-year-old dog helps her by opening the door.
In an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about pet news), Olimpio Manoel Ferreira, Ana’s husband, shared that he only had to teach Nathan how to open the door twice before he started doing it on his own, without needing a specific command.
“We just need to leave the door unlocked, because the house is fenced.”
The couple lives in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and when Ana leaves home, she needs a scooter to get around.
However, this is no longer an obstacle, because Nathan does it for her. According to Olimpio, they used to ask the dog to open the door, but now, when they arrive home, he does it automatically.
“He tried to open it, but he didn’t realize his ability. I just opened it with him a few times, and after only two times, he started opening it himself.”
Nathan is very attached to Ana, and Olimpio, aware of their strong bond, decided to teach him how to open the door, knowing it would make his wife’s life easier and give Nathan the joy of helping someone he loves.
“He is a great companion and is always by Ana’s side, keeping her company.”
The Shepherd is the couple’s third pet. They also have two cats, and all three get along very well. Additionally, Nathan is treated like a son:
“He’s a dog who lives with us. He has a room with a single bed and rugs on the floor to keep him warm or cool,” he explained. “On very hot days, he stays in our room, which has air conditioning.”
