Cat Starts Saying Mysterious Name After Being Away from Dogs — The Video Goes Viral
By Gabriele Tancredo Stella in Cats
A cat meowing is pretty normal, but speaking? That’s not normal at all! At least I’ve never seen it — until I met Thor and heard him say “Samuel”. Can you believe it? I would doubt it if someone told me, but since I’ve seen it with my own eyes — or rather, heard with my own ears — I have no doubts.
If you're feeling skeptical about this, I won’t even try to convince you with words — because the owner of this handsome boy, Ana Beatriz Delmondes, filmed the whole thing. Phew! She shared it on the @ogatothorr TikTok profile on June 15, leaving internet users in disbelief and curious to know who this Samuel is. I wonder who it is!
Thor lives with his owner in Bahia, Brazil. In an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about news), Ana shared how this sweet guy came into her life and how she captured this iconic moment when he says “Samuel”.
“Thor was adopted when he was two months old. He was found after falling off the wall at my boyfriend’s grandmother’s house. His mom gave birth to him on the roof and he fell,” she recalled.
Ana said that she tried to find his owners, and during the search, she received the news that his owner didn’t want anything to do with him and was looking for someone to adopt him. Without hesitation, Ana decided to adopt him. It was a new beginning for Thor in a big and loving family!
“Here at home, Thor has six siblings — four of them birds and two dogs, all adopted. He gets along very well with all of them.”
Thor is friends with all of the pets in the house, but especially the dogs. It was because of them that Ana managed to record the moment when he called out for “Samuel” in the video.
“I had to lock him up, separate from his dog siblings, so he wouldn’t leave because the door was open,” she recalled. “So he started meowing “Samuel” desperately. When we heard the audio from the video, it really seemed like he was calling for someone named Samuel (laughs).”
The kitty is very attached to his siblings. Every time he is separated for some reason — whether they went for a walk or are in different rooms — Thor meows — I mean, screams — “Samuel.”
Curiously, none of the dogs is called that name. So why does he call out for “Samuel”?
Regardless of why he calls for this “Samuel” guy, one thing’s for sure: even though he prefers his canine siblings — even more than his owner — she loves him very much.
“Thor is everything to me; he is my sweetheart and the youngest!” she declared. “Even though he is more attached to the dogs than to me, I would say I don’t recognize my life without him. He brings joy and fun to my happiest days and also to my saddest days. He is the light of my everyday life! Everyone here is absolutely in love with him… he’s the most beloved little baby,” she concluded.
Curious to see Thor’s cunning? Over 577,000 internet users have seen the video, 48,000 reacted, and thousands made funny comments, trying to answer the question in the video caption: “Who is Samuel?”

Well, the question that remains is: Can cats really speak?
According to Animal Wised, yes, cats can produce meows that may sound similar to a word or specific sound. Although they can’t truly speak words with meaning like humans, some cats can develop vocalizations that resemble certain sounds or even words.
However, it is important to remember that these vocalizations are not truly a form of verbal communication like human speech. Cats mainly use these meows to express their needs, such as hunger, attention, or a desire to communicate with their owners. Each cat can have its own unique vocal repertoire, and some can even seem to be pronouncing words on certain occasions.
Sometimes, these sounds can resemble words or even appear as if they are having a “conversation” with their owners. However, this occurs especially because of human interpretation of sounds and the association with specific words. Cat communication is based on body language, facial expressions, and olfactory cues rather than speech.
