Meet Amora, a Dog Who Wakes Up Every Time She Hears the Magical Word: “Hello?”
By Gabriele Tancredo Stella in Dogs
Have you ever seen a sleepy dog? And what about a nosy one? I bet you’ve never seen one quite like Amora, the mixed-breed dog. Not only does she sleep like no other pet — belly up and paws stretched out — but she only wakes up when she hears her owner, Jessica, answering the phone by saying “hello?” This little dog is a true gossip queen.
The video of this cutie sleeping in an unusual way and waking up upon hearing the magical word was shared on the @mulanamoraphoebe profile on social media on June 14.
The profile shares the routine of Amora and her two sisters, Mulan and Phoebe, who also love gossiping.
The trio lives with their owner in São Paulo, Brazil. In an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about pet , Jessica shared that the first one to arrive in the family was Mulan, who was adopted in 2017.
Amora came next in the following year, and Phoebe arrived in 2019.
“The three of them love gossiping and are very curious,” Jessica said, laughing.
Jessica works from home, so you can imagine that the trio must be attached to their owner, right? I guess it is every pet’s dream to have their owner close 24/7.
And because she works from home, the woman spends most of her time in silence, talking only with her pets.
“I only talk to them—on the phone, video, or through the apartment’s intercom,” she explained.
Used to hearing their owner speaking on the phone or through other means of communication, the dogs got used to hearing “hello” because that’s generally the word we use when starting a conversation over the phone.
That’s when the habit of them getting excited upon hearing this magical word started, so they could know who was on the other side of the phone. These pets are awesome!

Now Amora is the nosiest, because she could be in a deep sleep (in her unique position), and her owner could call her for anything, but she would only wake up when she hears “hello”. This word makes her turn at a 90-degree angle and pop her eyes open to find out who her owner is talking to.
“Amora is my little shadow; she is very loving and affectionate,” she declared.

Jessica says that this trio saved her life in 2020, when she went through a divorce and fell into depression, right as the pandemic started. “They gave me strength to get out of bed,” she said.
And don’t be mistaken, it’s not just “hello” that wakes up the trio; there are also other words. With Phoebe, it’s “food”, “treat”, and “cookie”. And with Mulan, it’s “Grandma” or “Aunt Juju”. There’s also “run the race” and “play the game”.
For this group, there are no bad days. They are pure joy! Follow them on social media here.
Can Dogs Understand Their Humans?
According to Inverse, in 2019, Holly Root-Gutteridge, a University of Sussex researcher, led a study that investigated how dogs can recognize the sounds of human speech. The study was published in the scientific journal Royal Society Open Science.
Root-Gutteridge and her team’s research used a method called “auditory evoked potentials” to measure dogs’ neural responses to human speech sounds. They tested whether dogs can distinguish words spoken with neutral and positive tones.
The results of the study revealed that dogs have the ability to distinguish words spoken in different tones. They showed different neural responses to words spoken in neutral and positive tones. This suggests that dogs not only process the words themselves but also take into account the emotional variables of human speech.
This research contributed to a better understanding of how dogs perceive and interpret human speech. In addition to this, it reinforces the idea that dogs are sensitive to the nuances of verbal communication and can discern the emotional differences in words spoken by their humans.
