Have you ever seen a puppy that’s a mix of Chow Chow and Pug? Groomer Jefferson Carvalho, who lives in Bahia, Brazil, introduced these adorable pups on social media. Jefferson even jokes that thanks to this crossbreed, “Pugchows” were born.

In the TikTok video he shared, Jefferson first introduces the mother, a Pug. Then the dad, a Chow Chow, followed by one of the puppies. (The mom gave birth to six—Jefferson kept one and found homes for the rest.)

The Pug, recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), is a small dog with a sweet temperament. It has a round head, expressive eyes, and a short coat in shades of silver to fawn. They’re affectionate and sociable dogs who love the company of people and other animals.

While not the most obedient, they’re capable learners with positive reinforcement. However, health issues—like breathing problems due to their flat snouts and eye conditions—can occur. With moderate energy levels, they enjoy playtime and naps—making them excellent companions.

The Chow Chow, according to the AKC, is a powerful and dignified breed. Medium-sized, it has a dense, upright coat that comes in various colors. Its distinctive appearance features deep-set eyes and a blue-black tongue. This breed is known for its independence and loyalty to family, though it can be reserved around strangers.

Their unique personality can lead to a dominant temperament, so early socialization and training are essential.

Regular exercise and good dental care are also important. The Chow Chow is a proud, mysterious companion who, with proper care, can be a loving member of the family.

Given the parents’ traits, what do you think the puppies would look like? Well, the result is an adorable mix!

The snout is similar to the Chow Chow’s, and netizens joked that this “version” improved on the Pug—especially when it comes to breathing.

Jefferson told Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about pet news), that the mating happened while he was away at work.

“She was in heat, but she didn’t show any signs. She didn’t present herself in front of me. We only realized she was pregnant when she got chubby. I brought her to the clinic to get an exam and find out what was going on.”
“It was a shock. I cried, laughed, and panicked. But the pet hospital I went to told me everything was fine—they just needed to keep an eye on her in case she couldn’t deliver naturally,” he said. “If needed, they would perform surgery to prevent any suffering. Her delivery was assisted—it began naturally, and the vets monitored everything.”

The groomer said he’s had dogs for years. They serve as models in the grooming courses he teaches, and he didn’t see the need to neuter them. However, after this incident, he decided to start spaying the females.

“My dogs mean everything to me. It’s because of them that I started a business in the pet industry and became a professional groomer and bather.”

Jefferson mentioned that he didn’t keep all the puppies because he already had eight dogs. To cover the birth expenses, he sold them to responsible owners, as he was going through financial difficulties at the time.

The Importance of Spaying and Neutering

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), spaying and neutering are essential parts of responsible pet care. Besides controlling unwanted reproduction, it helps prevent diseases and improves behavior. Reducing overpopulation helps prevent abandonment and eases the burden on animal shelters.

Surgery reduces the risk of tumors and infections in females, and prostate problems in males. It also helps reduce aggression, territory marking, and attempts to escape. Consulting a veterinarian is essential to determine the right time for the procedure and to understand its potential health impacts.
