Stray Dogs “Knock” on Canine Friend’s Door in the Middle of the Night With an Irresistible Invitation
By Gabriele Tancredo Stella in Dogs
Think dogs can’t be ungrateful? Think again. One example is Cavalo, a pup who doesn’t seem to appreciate the gift he received from his owner, Melissa Orige — he’d rather roam the streets than stay at home. What does that mean?
This handsome pup used to live on the streets of Santa Catarina, Brazil, until Melissa rescued him. But Cavalo isn’t exactly a fan of being cooped up at home. Which is understandable — he spent a long time as a free spirit, wandering the streets.
But that’s not all! Like a true street dog, he’s made plenty of friends — especially canine ones. When his “bros” show up at the gate, he convinces Melissa to let him out for a quick stroll with them. I honestly can’t with this guy!
Outraged by her dog’s behavior, Melissa recorded a video of his “betrayal” and shared it on her TikTok ( @melissaorige) on August 3. In the caption, she wrote: “Absurd! I took him off the street, but the street won’t let him go!”
In the video, the strays wait patiently on the sidewalk, ready to take Cavalo on their late-night tour.
Cavalo, who clearly knows what’s up, whines until Melissa lets him out. The best part? Their scheduled hangout time is 1 a.m. sharp. Apparently, being the mom of a rebellious dog isn’t easy — LOL!
In an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about pet news) Melissa said that a small dog showed up on her street and she adopted her — but she wasn’t alone. She had a friend: Cavalo.
Cavalo was very reactive and wouldn’t let anyone get close. But Melissa kept trying, and eventually, she earned his trust.
“A lot of people on our street care for strays and offer them shelter, but because Cavalo is so big, no one wanted him. When it got cold, we brought Cavalo inside — and he quickly realized it was much better to sleep somewhere warm and get some affection,” she explained.
Still, even with the comfort of home, Cavalo enjoys the streets and often goes out with the other strays, hanging out at the corner near the house. According to Melissa, “They love and look out for each other.”
“At night, he lets us know when he wants to come in and sleep in his bed. Otherwise, he’s out with his friends,” she said. “He’s a very sweet dog, but he doesn’t warm up to everyone — he’s cautious. He must’ve been through a lot in his life.”
Oh, Cavalo, you’re such a party animal! The post about this little adventure has garnered over 637,000 views, 86,000 likes, and thousands of comments.
“They were like, ‘Miss, let little Johnny play with us!’” joked one user.
“Open up, Karen — the boys are here!” joked another.
“You better keep an eye on those friends of his… those kids are trouble,” laughed a third.

Why Do Dogs Run Away Even When They Have a Home?
According to WebMD, this behavior can be driven by several factors. Some are motivated by curiosity and a natural urge to explore — the street offers new places and scents.
The need for socialization may also play a role, since the street offers interactions with other animals and people.
Additionally, the outdoors can be more stimulating than home, especially if the dog lacks activities and suffers from boredom.
However, it’s important to understand the risks of life on the streets — from accidents to illness and many other dangers.
It’s up to owners to provide a safe, enriching, and loving home — meeting their dog’s needs and preventing escapes with care and responsibility.
