In 2019, Antonio Francisco passed away due to complications from a stroke. In addition to his grieving family, someone else was deeply affected — his cat, Meg. Since then, the cat has been “asking” to see photos and videos of his beloved owner — and his reaction is truly heartwarming.

The family lives in São Paulo, and Antonio’s granddaughter, Nathalia Euzebio, filmed the moment when Meg saw a photo and heard his voice — and reacted in the most touching way.

He rubs his little head against the phone, as if he were rubbing against Antonio. When he hears Antonio’s voice, his reaction is even more touching — his ears perk up, and he listens intently to every word.

The video was shared on Nathalia’s TikTok profile (@neuzebio) on July 22, with the caption “I have no words, I swear.” It has since garnered over 100,000 views.

In an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian website about pet news), Nathalia explained that before her grandparents had Meg, they had another kitten who was tragically poisoned. They did everything they could to save him, but sadly, he didn’t make it.

“My grandmother had promised herself she wouldn’t have any more pets after that heartbreak. Then, when she least expected it, Meg appeared,” she said.

At first, the family thought Meg was a female, but after a visit to the vet, they found out “she” was actually a male. Since he had already adapted to the name, they decided to keep calling him Meg.

“The cat became very attached to my grandfather, who was already retired at the time — and even more so because my grandmother worked nights, so the cat became his sleeping companion,” she said.

Wherever my grandfather went, the kitten was right behind him. They were inseparable — until Antonio passed away, and Meg seemed lost without him.

“When my grandfather passed away, the cat refused to come into the living room. We would call him and he would stand at the door meowing. We started to suspect that it was because he missed being in the place where he had always spent time with my grandfather,” she explained. “A few days later, he came in, but whenever someone sat in the armchair, he would meow loudly for us to leave. As if to say, ‘This armchair has an owner, and he will be here soon.’ The cat took on a sad expression when he realized my grandfather wasn’t coming home — and never would.”

According to Nathalia, when her grandmother noticed how sad the cat was, she began comforting him — telling him she missed Antonio too, and that they would be each other’s companions, helping one another through the grief.

“After my grandmother retired, the big house felt even bigger without my grandfather. But I can tell you — this cat was essential in helping her feel less lonely and sad,” she said.

After Antonio passed away, the family took turns sleeping next to his widow, but the cat wouldn’t let them share the bed — pushing each person who lay down, as if to say, “I’m here, see? I’m her companion.”

“Meg is very important. He helped my grandmother overcome her sadness and grief, staying by her side as a companion through everything. He is very special,” she concluded.

This story is truly moving — and animals really are something special. Meg is living proof of that.

Do Cats Suffer from Grief?

According to the VCA Animal Hospital, yes, some cats may exhibit grieving behavior when they lose an owner or a reference figure with whom they had a strong emotional bond.

After a loss, your cat may show signs of grief — such as becoming quieter, isolating themselves, losing their appetite, or showing less interest in playing. Every cat is unique, and how they react to grief can vary.

It is important to give extra love, attention, and care to a cat going through this difficult time. If symptoms persist, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian to assess the animal’s health.
