When Your Cat’s Nap Is So Intense, It Sparks a Neighborhood Emergency

Luyza Andresa, 26, who lives in Guarulhos, São Paulo, is the proud owner of two adorable cats: Marcelo D2 and Skunk. They’re quite the characters, and one of them ended up making Luyza feel a bit embarrassed…

That’s because he slept on the balcony for nearly three hours in the same position, and the neighbors thought he was dead.

The video of this incident was shared on the TikTok profile @ocatverso, which documents the duo’s daily life, on April 12. And who was the star of the story? Skunk, the black kitten.

In the video, the feline appears sprawled on the balcony table. Luyza then says, “And the people in my building thought my cat was dead.” That’s because the little guy was completely motionless, lying in the same position for almost three hours. What would you think if you saw your neighbor’s cat like that? You’d probably think the same, right? I couldn’t stop laughing!

“We live in a building, there are neighbors, and the cat is sleeping like that,” says the young woman, pointing to Skunk, who’s completely zoned out, totally unconcerned about the chaos he caused—even the building manager called to ask if I had killed the cat. Just imagine the scene with the cat!

“Tell me, if you watch it from that perspective, wouldn’t you call animal control? Wouldn’t you call the police?” she asked. “Because it does look like he’s dead.”

This sleeping pattern is common in cats. According to the Met Life,—like many animals—cats remain still while sleeping because of the deep relaxation and rest they experience. During sleep, cats go through different stages, including light sleep and deep sleep.

In the deep sleep stage, the cat’s muscles are relaxed, and they adopt motionless positions and even appear completely still.

This is a natural part of the sleep cycle and should not be a cause for concern as long as the cat is breathing normally.

In an interview with Amo Meu Pet (our Brazilian pet news website), Luyza shared how this duo came into her life:

“They came into my life because of a very sad episode where I suffered a miscarriage and was going through depression. Then, my friend told me she had some kittens born at her boyfriend’s house, but she was afraid no one would want them because they were born with a little tail problem,” she recalled. “D2 isn’t as noticeable, but Skunk has a twisted tail, like a little pig’s [laughs]. I wanted him from the moment I found out, and his little brother was love at first sight.”

Well, the day of the commotion was actually a prank Luyza played on her neighbors. Looking out the window, she saw them pointing at Skunk with frightened expressions. “So, I played the prank, speaking loudly, just to keep them from really paying attention,” the young woman said, laughing.

“Honestly, he’s always been a heavy sleeper. Sometimes, when I’m cleaning the house and need to clean a spot where he might be lying, I move him, but he doesn’t even blink, he just snuggles in,” she explained. “After the first scare, I can identify his breathing by the movement of his tummy, but I confess that to this day I still get a few scares. My husband and I already know that when he eats a lot and goes to bed, it's a deep coma.”

Curious to see Skunk sleeping? Over 186,000 people watched, 20,000 reacted and hundreds commented.

“People don’t realize that kittens sometimes ‘bug out’—almost always,” wrote one internet user, laughing.
“Best building manager… he may be a gossip, but he was worried about the cat,” argued another.
“‘He died, but he’s doing well!’ I don’t say anything because I’m just like this cat. I die, but I come back to life,” a third compared.
